VALIDUS is a Latin word, and is translated as “strong, powerful, valid.”
Our name conveys:
- the strength of our convictions
- the power of relationships as partnerships, and
- our belief in a well-founded, sound approach to investing.
Mark Scalzo founded Validus in 2012. Having spent over 20 years working in the fast-paced, intense pressure of investment banking on both coasts — New York City and San Francisco – Mark sought to create a business that would be intentionally insulated from Wall Street’s “sphere of influence.” In the summer of 2012, Mark and his family found themselves in the town of Truckee, located in the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada mountains. This pristine area provided the ideal birthplace for Mark’s creative vision, and he began to give form to his idea — a fundamental, bottom-up, stock-specific research process, anchored by a proprietary ranking system, founded on pre-existing principles, but built upon and developed in an original way. Mark’s determination and belief in his vision has resulted in the creation of Validus — a firm dedicated to original thinking, disciplined execution, and enduring insights.
